Battery backup: easiest place to start

A portable power station stores electricity in a battery and supplies power through its outlets. There is no gasoline engine running while it powers your devices, so it can be a convenient option for phones, Wi-Fi, lights, small electronics and selected appliances when the unit is properly sized.

Portable generator: more sustained power with more hands-on work

A portable generator can support higher sustained loads and can keep operating as long as compatible fuel remains available. That makes it attractive for multi-day outages and heavier essential loads.

Standby generator: automatic backup built into the home

A standby generator is permanently installed and typically works with automatic transfer equipment. When utility power fails, the system can start and transfer the selected home loads to generator power without the homeowner manually deploying a portable unit.

That convenience comes with a larger infrastructure commitment: generator sizing, transfer equipment, electrical work, fuel supply, permitting and ongoing maintenance all become part of the system. Depending on the design, a standby system can support selected circuits or much broader home coverage.

Start with your loads

Before spending money, list what you actually need during an outage. Phones, Wi-Fi, lights and refrigeration are a very different backup problem from central air conditioning, electric water heating, cooking equipment or well pumps.
