What Size Extension Cord Do I Need for a Generator?

A generator cord should be chosen around the equipment it will power—not simply by buying the longest or thickest cord on the shelf. Start with the appliance load and generator outlet, then verify that the cord is rated for that load, intended for outdoor use and long enough to maintain safe generator placement.

Quick answer: Use a heavy-duty, outdoor-rated, three-prong cord whose electrical rating is adequate for the connected load. Check the cord's printed rating and the requirements of the actual appliance and generator rather than relying on a universal gauge chart.

Start with the appliance, not the cord gauge

Identify what the cord will power and check that appliance's label or manufacturer documentation. Then compare that requirement with the generator outlet and the cord's marked voltage, amperage or wattage rating. CPSC guidance says generator extension cords should have wire gauge adequate for the appliance loads and all three prongs, including the grounding pin.

If several devices will share a cord or approved distribution arrangement, the combined load matters. Do not exceed the ratings of the generator outlet, cord, connectors or connected equipment.

Why wire gauge matters

Wire gauge describes conductor size. For common American Wire Gauge markings, a lower AWG number means a larger conductor. But gauge alone does not establish that a cord is suitable for a particular generator setup. Length, conductor count, insulation, connectors and the cord manufacturer's electrical rating also matter.

The safest shopping method is to use the cord manufacturer's stated amp/watt rating for the specific cord length and confirm that it meets the requirements of the equipment you intend to power.

Length matters too

Longer cords can increase voltage drop, which is one reason generator and equipment manufacturers may place limits on extension-cord length or specify particular cord sizes. Use only the length you need while still keeping the generator at a safe operating distance.

Do not shorten the safety distance to use a shorter cord: CPSC recommends operating a portable generator outdoors at least 20 feet from the house with exhaust directed away from the home and other buildings. Florida emergency guidance likewise requires outdoor operation away from windows, doors and vents.

Use an outdoor-rated cord

Florida emergency guidance specifically calls for heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords in good condition. CPSC's extension-cord safety requirements also distinguish outdoor cords by protective jacket construction. Check the cord's markings and product documentation rather than assuming that a heavy-looking cord is intended for outdoor use.

Match the plug and outlet correctly

Portable generators can have more than one receptacle type. The cord and connectors must be designed for the generator outlet and the intended load. Do not modify plugs, remove a grounding pin or improvise adapters simply to make incompatible equipment connect.

Higher-output generator connections and household-circuit connections can involve different cords, inlets and transfer equipment than a standard appliance extension cord. Follow the generator manufacturer's documentation and use qualified electrical help for a home-circuit connection.

Never use a male-to-male generator cord

Do not use a cord with exposed male plugs on both ends to feed electricity into a household receptacle. In March 2026, CPSC again warned consumers that male-to-male cords can expose energized prongs and create electrocution and fire hazards. Using them to backfeed a home can also energize wiring unexpectedly and endanger other people.

A simple buying checklist

  1. Identify the appliance or equipment you need to power.
  2. Check its actual electrical requirements.
  3. Identify the generator receptacle you will use.
  4. Choose a three-prong, heavy-duty cord intended for outdoor use.
  5. Verify the specific cord's amp/watt rating is adequate for the load.
  6. Use enough length to maintain safe generator placement without buying unnecessary length.
  7. Confirm the plug and connector configuration matches the equipment without unsafe modification.
  8. Inspect the cord before each use and replace damaged cords.
