We think readers should be able to tell the difference. A guide labeled first-hand project is based on something we actually own, installed or used. A research-based guide draws on authoritative sources and clearly identified product information. We do not claim to have tested a product that we have not personally tested.
How recommendations are developed
Recommendations are based on the needs of the problem first. Depending on the topic, that can include first-hand experience, manufacturer specifications, safety guidance, expected maintenance, suitability for Florida conditions, ownership cost and other practical tradeoffs. We aim to explain why a product or approach fits rather than simply publish a list of popular items.
