Portable Generator Accessories for Florida Hurricane Season

A portable generator is only one part of an outage setup. The supporting equipment has to let you place it safely, reach the loads you planned for, manage fuel and reduce carbon-monoxide risk.

Start with safety: Florida emergency guidance says portable generators should be operated outdoors on a dry surface and at least 20 feet from windows, doors, vents and air-conditioning equipment. Never run one in a garage or other enclosed space.

1. Heavy-duty outdoor-rated extension cords

For directly powered appliances, use cords suitable for the load and outdoor use. Florida emergency guidance recommends heavy-duty outdoor-rated cords in good condition. CPSC guidance says the cord should have wire gauge adequate for the connected load and retain all three prongs.

2. Carbon-monoxide alarms

CPSC recommends working CO alarms in the home. Battery-operated or battery-backup alarms remain useful during a power outage.

Important: A CO alarm is a backup layer of protection. It does not make indoor, garage or too-close generator operation safe.

3. Weather protection designed for operation

Emergency guidance says generators should be kept dry while maintaining safe ventilation. Any operating cover or canopy should be intended for that use and used according to both the generator and cover manufacturers' instructions. Do not move a running generator into a garage to protect it from rain.

4. Safe fuel storage and refueling supplies

Use approved, properly labeled fuel containers and follow the generator manufacturer's fuel requirements. Store fuel away from living areas and ignition sources. Before refueling, shut the generator down and let it cool; Florida emergency guidance warns against spilling gasoline on hot generator surfaces.

5. Flashlight or headlamp

A dedicated light makes nighttime fuel checks, cord inspections and control operation easier. Keep appropriate spare batteries or a charged backup with the generator supplies.

6. Proper equipment for household circuits

Never use a male-to-male cord or plug a generator into a household receptacle to backfeed the home. CPSC warns that these connections can create electrocution and fire hazards, and backfeeding can energize utility lines.

If you intend to power household circuits, use properly designed connection equipment selected and installed for the generator and home by a qualified professional in accordance with applicable requirements.

7. Maintenance supplies specified by the manufacturer

The owner's manual determines the maintenance schedule and consumables. Depending on the generator, that may include specified engine oil, filters, spark plugs or service tools. Test and maintain the generator before hurricane conditions arrive.

8. A simple load plan

Priority checklist

For a portable-generator setup, focus first on equipment required for safe placement and the planned loads: appropriately rated outdoor cords, working CO alarms, suitable weather protection if needed, approved fuel containers and maintenance items specified by the owner's manual. Household-circuit connection equipment is a separate installation decision.
