What Size Dehumidifier Do I Need for a Florida Garage?
For a Florida garage, square footage is only half the sizing question. The other half is how damp the space actually is. Measure relative humidity first, then choose capacity.
Measure humidity before choosing a size

Current ENERGY STAR sizing ranges
Dehumidifier capacity is expressed as pints of water removed in 24 hours under specified test conditions. ENERGY STAR says appropriate capacity depends on both space size and moisture conditions.

ENERGY STAR describes these as minimum-capacity ranges and notes that oversizing is generally preferable to undersizing.
A practical example
Suppose a two-car garage repeatedly measures 75–80% RH. Even though its floor area is well under 2,000 square feet, its moisture condition falls into the very-damp range. That is why choosing the smallest machine based only on square footage can be misleading.
When to lean toward more capacity
More capacity can make sense when measured RH is persistently high or the space experiences frequent humid-air exchange. But a larger machine is not a substitute for repairing leaks, standing water or failed weather seals.
Size first, then compare features
Once you have a defensible capacity range, compare models within that range. Humidistats, continuous drainage, automatic restart, efficiency and maintenance access can all matter, but they should not distract from getting capacity right.
